Diagnosis of Ovarian Pathologies in Mares

Pets & Animals

The Professional Master’s Degree Equine Hospital Medicine of TECH train professionals to treat pathologies of the genitourinary system in hospitalized patients.

Veterinary clinical techniques can be used in the diagnosis of the different pathologies of the mare’s reproductive system through behavioral observation, clinical examination, rectal ovarian palpation, transrectal ultrasound of the ovary, hormonal analysis, ovarian biopsy and karyotyping. The Professional Master’s Degree Equine Hospital Medicine  is focused on treatment of tumors and other conditions requiring surgical interventions.

Thus, the pathologies of the mare’s ovary can be divided as follows:

  • Pathologies of follicular development
    • Chromosomal alterations: Such an alteration may be suspected in a mare of reproductive age with primary infertility and gonadal hypoplasia. The most often diagnosed chromosomal abnormality in the mare is gonadal dysgenesis, in which only one sex chromosome is present.
    • Age-related ovarian dysfunction: This has been identified as a cause of subfertility in mares over 20 years of age, usually with decreased oocyte viability and a high incidence of early embryonic mortality and miscarriages.
    • Exogenous hormonal treatments: Administrate anabolic steroids in the mare can cause alterations in estrous behavior and ovarian function, therefore, the use of anabolic steroids should be avoided in mares that will be used as breeders.
    • Equine Cushing’s Syndrome: Mares with hypertrophy, hyperplasia or adenoma formation in the intermediate part of the pituitary gland present abnormal estrous cycles, infertility or both disorders simultaneously, however, the mechanisms which produces these reproductive alterations have not yet been found.
  • Ovulation pathologies
    • Anovulatory follicles: These produce abnormal estrous behavior and prolongation of the Inter ovulatory period, the lack of ovulation may have an etiology of endocrine character, either due to lack of adequate secretion of gonadotrophins to trigger ovulation or insufficient estrogen production by the anovulatory follicle.
    • Ovarian hematomas: Most of these correspond to the presence of persistent anovulatory follicles.

In addition to the above, it is necessary to make the correct diagnosis to know how to go ahead according to the condition of the animal, this should be done by an expert in the field and thus be able to supply a better quality of life for the patient.
